I am Tod Zhang, I am from China, I got an MSc in international logistics from the University of Plymouth. I choose to study shipping here because Plymouth is pre-eminent for marine science. When I was in Plymouth, I built up a good foundation knowledge of the industry, I have also learned how to study and research in a UK University as part of the degree process.

Plymouth is excellent for marine & maritime studies, in my first year I did a Masters Qualifying Programme course, this helped me to use the library, explained how to teach yourself in a brand new subject area, how to write a proper essay and how to do a presentation and seminar. On my Master's course, the teaching staff brought their wide shipping knowledge to us as the syllabus covers all sectors of the shipping industry. The University of Plymouth is also affiliated to the Institute of Chartered Shipbroker's, which means that Plymouth shipping graduates can get some exemption from the shipbroker course.

The thing that impressed me the most while studying here was how peaceful and simple life in Plymouth is. Plymouth is an ideal, quiet place for study, this city is not as busy as the big metropolitan centres, and there are not lots of distractions here. I did join the university horse riding club, I really enjoyed the friendship and care that came from the club members, riding horses in the English countryside and appreciating the beautiful landscape. I also got involved with the sailing club - sailing in the Plymouth Sound is really a great joy.

After I finished my shipping course at Plymouth in 2004, I went to London to take a year's internship with a number of different shipping companies and organisations - the Baltic Exchange, James Fisher Tankers, the Nautical Institute and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. I then joined E.A.Gibson, the world's biggest tanker broker. Here I was trained as a SAP broker, especially focusing on building new business in China, this February, I was sent back to China as a Chief Representative to set up Gibson's first mainland office in Shanghai. I recently moved on in my career and I now work for Icape Hyde shipbrokers based in London - I just feel I am really a lucky guy - and the luck started at the University of Plymouth!
